Nomination for the Piranesi Prize 2025

Our project for the renovation of the Bratuše Homestead in Bistrica ob Sotli has been selected as one of the five Slovenian architectural works nominated for the international Piranesi Prize 2025.

In his explanatory statement, National Selector Tomaž Ebenšpanger said: “The Bratus Homestead (studio abiro) is an example of a contextually sensitive and innovative renovation of a cultural monument of local significance, which at the same time meets the contemporary needs for intergenerational and assisted living. The central house, dating back to the late 19th century, has been renovated in accordance with conservation guidelines, preserving historic details such as the wooden roof, the floor structure and the stenciled paintings on the plasterwork, which tell the story of past generations. The project builds on the existing ensemble with thoughtful new additions: two dwellings are built on the site of the old hayloft, following the tectonic design of its predecessor, while a reinterpreted trestle serves as a shelter and occasional social space. The renovation makes use of local building skills and materials, maintaining a respectful relationship with the natural and cultural environment, while introducing modern architectural approaches and functionalities. The project is also convincing as a socially sustainable and inclusive model – creating an intergenerational community that connects young and old, and providing an example of how smaller rural municipalities can revitalise cultural monuments outside of museumised and touristic contexts. The Bratuš Homestead is both architecturally and socially innovative, combining tradition and modernity, and through its forms, materials and details, it maintains a genuine link with local identity and tradition.”
