Regional nomination for the Golden Pencil Award

The expert jury of the Slovenian Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning has included the Stora Enso Promotional Pavilion in Planica among the nominations of the Kranj region for the Golden Pencil Award. The winners will be announced at the Architects’ Day on Friday, 6. October 2023, in Nova Gorica.

Being one of the nominated projects is a great recognition for us, especially as the building can no longer be visited. With the conclusion of the Ski Flying World Cup in April 2023, the original mission of this facility has come to an end. Carefully dismantled, it has been moved to Ljubljana and is de facto built into the walls of the apartment block’s extension. This fulfils the project’s basic commitment not to discard building materials and semi-finished products because of its temporary location.

The spatial infrastructure of mass events, sports and cultural, is often generic, prefabricated and strictly utilitarian. Stora Enso has set itself the much more ambitious task of ensuring that its pavilion does not generate construction waste, but at the same time works in harmony with the local environment and is based on biogenic construction materials of its own production, which are rarely used in the infrastructure of major events.

For us, designing this kind of building was a challenge. The knowledge and professional values we have acquired during the design process will serve as a model for the design of future, even much more “durable” buildings. After all, it’s all a matter of time perspective, because sooner or later, any building that is built is going to be transformed. If we keep this in mind at the time of its creation, we have done a lot to conserve natural resources.
