The alternative solution of the competition project – which complements the client’s brief – proposes to move stationary traffic almost entirely underground, which significantly improves the quality of the city-forming urban open spaces.
In terms of programme and volume, the MŠK buildings dominate their surroundings. A new cultural and sports centre is created, with an open space rich in ambience. The area under consideration is mostly relieved of motor traffic in one of the variants of the competition proposal, while in the other variant it is allocated to the foreseen amount of external parking spaces. The western edge of the site is to be used for access to the existing buildings and for employee parking and deliveries. On the NE edge, the entrance from Šolska Street shall be formed; an entrance/exit ramp for the public garage shall be placed there, and a small number of parking spaces shall be provided in front of the sports and business centre.
The building of the cultural centre is dimensionally more dominant and opens onto the south square, which serves as an anteroom for cultural events. The double-sided stage also opens the hall into a rear space, which is designed as an outdoor car park or urban park. The promenade connects various amenities through the area. The open design of the space is inclusive; it offers the development of different activities or simply allows passage for passers-by.
The Cultural Centre (CC) is designed as a compact volume with two highlights: the stage tower and the offices for the associations and the administration. Along the promenade is a semi-public parterre; a two-storey foyer, the gallery connects to the outdoor spaces through glass surfaces. Entrances are organised from the south square, the promenade and the park. The foyer enriches the wider space programmatically; the café opens onto the south square, the exhibition spaces can continue along the promenade, … Contrasting the transparent entrance lobby, the rest of the volume is designed with a full façade that only opens in places. The whole volume is connected by a layer of façade, which is linked to the local dry-edge tradition by a knitting pattern.
The Sports and Business Centre (SBC) is located next to Šolska Street and thus sports activities are not distracting for cultural events. However, the two buildings complement each other and are connected through the garage and common open spaces. The sports and business centre houses a multifunctional common space programme with a bar and co-working offices. The ground floor of the volume is designed transparently and opens onto the promenade with a bar, while the upper two floors form an overhang along one side, suggesting separate entrances. Sports activities (bowling, bowling) are located in the basement, thus avoiding acoustic nuisance to neighbouring buildings.
The two buildings, together with the designed external areas, form a whole that complements the current situation and builds on it in a meaningful way.
