The spatial layout of the five small ski jumps has thoroughly interfered with the landscape and topography of the valley area and geometrically regulated all the developments in the centre area.
With the second phase of renovation and the construction of additional ski jumps, the Nordic Centre becomes a national centre for training and development of Nordic sports. The simultaneous summer and winter use allows the centre to be active all year round, while also becoming an attractive tourist destination.
The five smaller ski jumps, which are mainly used for training younger sportsmen and sportswomen, were moved and their axes rotated in the competition solution from their previously planned position. The Bloudek Giant and the Goriška Brothers Aerodrome are positioned in the slope so that the axes of their profiles meet at an apparent point at the top of the slope. The other five ski jumps were also oriented towards the same intersection, thus achieving a harmonious unification of all major interventions in the area. In a similar way, the location of the fan-shaped outlets of all the ski jumps is unified as a series of gradually rising terraces. The large open relief “staircase” is also the symbolic entrance to the Tamar Valley and the Triglav National Park.
Even though the ski jumps are much smaller than their neighbours, the construction of this part of the centre was the most logistically challenging, as motorised access for construction technology and materials from the top side was not possible. The entire construction was based on the use of a mountain cableway, which transported all the material to the slopes of the individual ski jumps.
The visual and structural design of all the buildings follows the previous phase of the restoration of the Bloudek Giantess, with all the buildings being appropriately smaller and simpler. For example, with the three sizes of the referee towers, children’s, youth and Olympic, we can follow the variation of the same architectural theme through gradations of scale and complexity. Access to the individual ramps is provided by a specially designed inclined lift, both the cab itself and the canopy at the lower station.
